You could argue that the Houston Astros won twice on Sunday. The first win came during a 13-3 rout over the Los Angeles Angels. The second came hours later, when the team announced top prospect Alex Bregman would make his major-league debut Monday. [read full article]

CC Sabathia takes a tumble off the mound while throwing pitch (Big League Stew)
If you’ve ever seen Los Angeles Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons play, you know what we mean. Simmons’genius is that he can make difficult plays look routine, and impossible plays seem possible. In the sixth inning of Thursday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, Sabathia took a tumble off the mound while attempting to throw a pitch. [read full article]

Trout, Choi go deep as Angels top Rangers (The Associated Press)
Mike Trout's latest exploit enabled the Los Angeles Angels to frustrate the plans of one of the American League West's contenders. Trout's three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a four-run rally that gave the Angels a 9-5 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night at Angel Stadium. Ji-Man Choi added his first major league home run as the Angels earned their eighth win in 10 games and their fourth in succession, matching their season high. [read full article]

White Sox-Angels preview (The Associated Press)
It was exactly one year ago as the Los Angeles Angels were about to embark on the second half of the season after the All-Star break that Angels left-hander Hector Santiago was on top of the world. Santiago, though, goes into Friday's start against the Chicago White Sox in a completely different situation. Santiago shut out the Tampa Bay Rays on three hits over seven innings in his last start July 7 and he likely will be a target for teams looking to make deals before the non-waiver trading deadline on Aug. 1. Angels take 3rd straight for longest win streak in 2 months (The Associated Press)
It's going to take a lot more than winning a series from the struggling Tampa Bay Rays for the last-place Los Angeles Angels to turn their season around. Winning three straight for the first time in nearly three months is encouraging, though, especially considering the type of pitching performancethe team got from Hector Santiago in Thursday's 5-1 victory. Santiago limited the sputtering Rays to three singles over seven scoreless innings, C.J. Cron drove in two runs and Albert Pujols snapped a scoreless tie with a single that gave him 15 RBIs in his last 15 games. [read full article]

Rangers-Red Sox preview (The Associated Press)
Offense hasn't been a problem for the Red Sox through 81 games, but Boston's struggles on the mound are threatening to undo all the good the team is doing at the plate. At the midway point, the Red Sox (44-37) have scored a league-leading 451 runs, a total they added to handsomely Sunday in a 10-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels. "While this is a strong offensive team, we still have areas of improvement," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. [read full article]

Angels-Rays preview (The Associated Press)
Two teams with nearly identical records and similar losing streaks meet as the Los Angeles Angels and Tampa Bay Rays play four games at Tropicana Field, with both teams desperately trying to regain positive momentum before the All-Star break. The Rays (33-48) have lost 16 of 18 games as they officially enter the second half of the season, and their bullpen has given up runs in 17 of those games. On Sunday, the Rays had a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning, only to see reliever Xavier Cedeno allow two inherited runners to score, with more runs coming in the ninth. [read full article]

Ortiz hits 522nd HR, Red Sox beat Angels 5-4 (The Associated Press)
David Ortiz celebrated two milestones on one hit and the Boston Red Sox survived two very close calls. Ortiz's solo homer in the fifth inning Friday night was his 2,000th hit with Boston and 522nd career home run, moving into sole possession of 19th place on baseball's all-time list and breaking a tie he held with a trio of Hall of Famers including Red Sox great Ted Williams. ''The man did it all,'' Ortiz said of Williams after Boston's 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. [read full article]

Tricky bounce and Pesky's Pole cost Angels potential win in Boston (Big League Stew)
The Los Angeles Angels were so close to victory Friday night in Boston, yet they were so far away. In fact, in the ninth inning, they were literally inches away from turning a 5-4 loss to the Red Sox into a potential victory. All they needed was a favorable bounce on Daniel Nava’s double down the right field line. [read full article]

Angels-Red Sox preview (The Associated Press)
One of the teams -- the host Boston Red Sox -- still has a chance to fix things and stay in the pennant race. The Los Angeles Angels, 8-19 in June, have lost nine of their last 10 and sit in last place in the American League West with a 32-47 record. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox -- 10-16 in June -- are still in position to contend and open a nine-game homestand that leads up to the All-Star break. [read full article]

Orioles-Mariners preview (The Associated Press)
The improbable and obscure owner of that distinction takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners on Friday night as the 31-year-old left-hander brings a 23 2/3-innings scoreless streak into his start against the Baltimore Orioles. LeBlanc's scoreless streak, which only applies to major league games, extends all the way back to Sept. 2, 2014, when he was pitching out of the Los Angeles Angels' bullpen. [read full article]
